ESAT 2026 | 34th European Symposium on Applied Thermodynamics - A Successful Edition
The 34th European Symposium on Applied Thermodynamics (ESAT 2026) has come to a close, leaving behind an exceptional scientific gathering that surpassed all expectations. Held from 10 to 13 May 2026, the event brought together approximately 250 participants from a wide range of countries, reflecting the truly international dimension of one of the most prestigious conferences in Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics.
This edition marked a special milestone: for the first time, ESAT was organised in Lisbon, and the choice of venue proved to be one of the highlights of the event. Hosted at the Tróia Design Hotel, on the scenic Tróia Peninsula, the venue provided a memorable backdrop for four days of science and connection.
A Rich Scientific Programme
The scientific programme featured a series of plenary sessions delivered by leading experts in thermodynamics, complemented by a rich set of parallel sessions covering the symposium's diverse topics. Among the most anticipated moments of the programme were three special sessions held in honour of distinguished figures in the field:
Session in Honour of Professor John M. Prausnitz
Session in Honour of Professor Maurizio Fermeglia
Session in Honour of Professor Karel Aim
These sessions served as a tribute to the remarkable contributions of three eminent scientists whose work has shaped modern thermodynamics, drawing heartfelt participation from the international community.
A Night to Remember
The Gala Dinner provided a warm and festive conclusion to the scientific programme. The evening was enlivened by a special musical performance by Antunia - Tuna Académica da NOVA FCT, whose presence brought both energy and a distinctly Portuguese cultural flavour to the celebrations, delighting participants from across the globe.
Acknowledgements
NOVA ID FCT would like to express its sincere gratitude to all those who contributed to making ESAT 2026 an outstanding success.
A special word of thanks is due to the Organising Committee, led by Chair Prof. Eugénia A. Macedo (LSRE-LCM/ALICE, Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto), and Co-Chairs Prof. Ana B. Pereiro and Prof. João M. M. Araújo (LAQV/REQUIMTE, NOVA School of Science and Technology, NOVA University Lisbon), whose dedication and commitment were fundamental to the quality of this edition.
We also extend our deep appreciation to all members of the scientific and organising committees, session chairs, invited speakers, and volunteers whose invaluable work ensured the smooth running of the event.
NOVA ID FCT would like to warmly thank NOVA Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia | NOVA FCT for its continued institutional support, which was essential to the organisation of this symposium.
Finally, a heartfelt thank you to the Tróia Design Hotel for the outstanding hospitality, attentive service, and excellent facilities provided throughout the event. The team's professionalism and warmth contributed greatly to the overall experience of all participants.
We look forward to welcoming the thermodynamics community again at the next Edition of ESAT.
