Abstract:

The general objective of this proposal is to increase of our fundamental understanding of molecular and cellular processes underlying virulence of the human bacterial pathogen Chlamydia trachomatis, which affects millions of people worldwide and can cause blindness and sterility. We will analyze the function of C. trachomatis inclusion membrane (Inc) proteins. These proteins are characterized by decorating the membrane of the vacuole where Chlamydia resides and multiplies intracellularly, and they have a pivotal role in mediating Chlamydia-host cell interactions. The added knowledge on the infection biology of C. trachomatis that will be achieved could eventually contribute for the development of novel prophylactic and therapeutic measures against C. trachomatis infections.
