Abstract:
This project envisages the development of inexpensive, nature-inspired ionic fluids (NATIFs) using wholly materials from renewable resources and their assessment in the development of benign extraction processes using aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) for the purification of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). It is challenging with multidisciplinary input, from theory to thermophysical and transport property measuring, as well as phase equilibria determination. It will deliver both fundamental understanding of the behaviour of these new ionic fluids and the skill to manipulate that behaviour to process development and scale-up. These new ionic fluids that are inexpensive and environmentally friendly include ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs), synthesized by natural primary metabolites (major cellular constituents) such as sugars, sugar alcohols, amino acids, organic acids, and choline derivatives.
